Playwright David Mamet once wrote, “The power of a person to serve is in direct proportion to the strength of his or her resistance to the urge to control.” So how do we serve without controlling? The answer is by listening. We all have different situations and life experiences that contribute to our life. Just because we are able to navigate the waters of our life, does not mean that we know what is best to navigate the waters of someone else’s life. To help we must look at things from their point of view. See the world the way they see it. Jesus gives us an example of this in how he taught. He got inside people’s lives. He taught what they knew. He was there to give a hand not a shove in the back.
